28 May 1870
My vocal anatomy education in University College, London came to an end. It was an amazing 3 years. I learned a lot of new things and now my head is full of ideas. I am 23 year old man I must be living a happy life. But my life has not been all sunshine lately. My other brother died when I was getting educated in there. He died from tuberculosis too. He suffered from disease a lot. It wasn’t an easy death for him. I prayed a lot for him to be cured. But Tuberculosis has no mercy. I was sick for a lot of time again. I got really sad and depressed after my brothers death. As well as my parents did. They are afraid that I am soon or later going to die from tuberculosis if we stay in this city. I am the only left child from them, so they cared about me more than ever. My father says that he had been to Canada. He went to Canada when he was small and he says that it was good to his health. He thinks we should move the family there so I can regain my health. Even though I like it here a lot in UK, I think he is right. After seeing both my brothers die, they wouldn’t be able to handle the pain if I die too. Late 1870 Today I got an honorable offer from the Mohawk people. They came and told me that they wanted to make me an Honorary Chief. I kindly accepted their offers. They are really kind people and they are not actually modern like most people think. Even though they have a different sense of fashion then us, I think it is amazing. They are really kind and generous. They have better people than in UK. In UK you can’t be really this close to people. You can’t trusts everyone here in Ontario. But here everyone trust each other which makes the perfect community. I don’t know why they chose me as an Honorary Chief. I was just being myself all time. I helped with my ideas time by time but it wasn’t not a big deal. But I think I really fit in. I did their Mohawk hair too. I have a lot of friends here. I really can speak Mohawk language fluently now. This place really suits me. I am feeling a lot better. I feel a lot more energetic thanks to this clean air here. It really helps me. It’s a lot better than the air in UK, which is filled with disease and gas from factories. 1872 I love working with the deaf. There are some deaf people where ever you go and they need help. I love working with them. There are not many people who try to help them. That’s one of the reasons I had in my mind when I opened the School of Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of Speech in Boston. I moved here a month ago. I can teach a lot of deaf students to speak there. I feel really good when I communicate with them. And the best feeling is when one of your students that you try to teach speaking tells me “Thank you!” It really is the best feeling in the world. I also enjoy working with university students in Boston University School of Oratory. It is really different from teaching deaf. I feel more efficient when I work with deaf because everyone can give a lesson about Vocal Physiology and Elocution. But I need the money and they accepted me even though I don’t have a university degree. |
